In 1992, three individuals having Muscular Dystrophy along with a few social workers started Indian Association of Muscular Dystrophy (IAMD) to provide relief and rehabilitation to the people afflicted with Muscular Dystrophy in India and also to create public awareness.
From its grass root beginnings, IAMD was registered in 1995 with its headquarters at Solan, Himachal Pradesh. Since establishment, IAMD has undertaken numerous endeavours to improve lives of families with Muscular Dystrophy:
IAMD worked hard to gain recognition for Muscular Dystrophy as a disorder with the Indian government. IAMD subsequently established a state of the art therapy centre (IMDRC Manav Mandir) to provide a place where individuals with Muscular Dystrophy and other disabilities can receive early intervention, prevention, treatment (corrective surgeries), education, rehabilitation and eventual employment.
Contributed to the framing of the disability policy of the Himachal Government
Taken up with the State government the project of awareness with the National Health Mission (NHM)
Has been a catalyst in bringing Muscular Dystrophy in 1995 Persons with disabilities law
Kept in touch with patients and families through zoom meetings
Participated in the neurology meetings of AIIMS and PGI
Been co-partners in organising two international conferences (2009 and 2014)
