About IAMD

IAMD exists as a result of efforts and endeavours made by not only our core team, but countless physiotherapists, volunteers, doctors, donors and sponsors.

In 1992, three individuals having Muscular Dystrophy along with a few social workers started Indian Association of Muscular Dystrophy (IAMD) to provide relief and rehabilitation to the people afflicted with Muscular Dystrophy in India and also to create public awareness.

From its grass root beginnings, IAMD was registered in 1995 with its headquarters at Solan, Himachal Pradesh. Since establishment, IAMD has undertaken numerous endeavours to improve lives of families with Muscular Dystrophy:

  • Organising medical awareness Camps throughout India
  • Running Physiotherapy centres
  • Organising residential rehabilitation Camps
  • Organising Care Giver Support
  • Organising Wheel Chair Support
  • Day Care Centre for children With all types of disabilities.
  • Facilitating diagnostic and DNA testing
  • Raising awareness amongst volunteers
  • Facilitating Financial Assistance
  • Providing up to date information about ongoing research etc.
  • Networking with the state as well as central government
  • Opening up two physiotherapy and counselling centres (1) Chandigarh (run by Prof. Bipan Kaushal from 2010-2022), (2) Delhi opened up in 2014 and still running

IAMD worked hard to gain recognition for Muscular Dystrophy as a disorder with the Indian government. IAMD subsequently established a state of the art therapy centre (IMDRC Manav Mandir) to provide a place where individuals with Muscular Dystrophy and other disabilities can receive early intervention, prevention, treatment (corrective surgeries), education, rehabilitation and eventual employment.
