Honored Life With A Life

A call received from a friend saddens me. He called to inform me that his wife had delivered a second girl couple of hours ago. I was sad, not because of baby girl, but because the joy of becoming a father was missing from his voice. She is just two hour old and my friend and I heated argument about when she will be twenty, when she will be a woman, and when she will be a liability. A girl in India is never born as a child; she is always born as a liability, as a burden and as someone giving grief.
